Looking for an active, outdoor job where your work makes an immediate impact? The City is seeking a Temporary Landscape Maintenance Technician to support our Landscape Division. This position involves performing basic landscape and grounds maintenance, assisting with tree care, and helping with clean-up and special projects across City properties. Assignment Duration: Approximately four to six months, however the exact duration is unknown.
Schedule: Full-time (temporary), 9/80 schedule; Monday - Thursday, 6:30 am to 4:00 pm, and every other Friday, 6:30 am to 3:00 pm.
Typical Duties:
• Perform basic landscape and grounds maintenance on City property, including raking, chipping, moving brush, and general clean-up
• Assist with tree and vegetation work by clearing debris and supporting pruning and trimming activities
• Perform manual labor such as digging, lifting, loading, and transporting tools, materials, and green waste
• Set up, move, and remove cones, barricades, and signage to establish safe work zones
• Operate basic hand tools and equipment (e.g., rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, backpack blowers, chippers) under supervision
• Assist with traffic and pedestrian control when working in streets, medians, parkways, or rights-of-way
• Support special projects, emergency response, and City events as assigned
• Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment
• Interact professionally with the public and refer questions or concerns to appropriate City staff
Employment Standards & Special Requirements
• Knowledge of: Standard landscape and grounds maintenance practices, techniques, equipment, and materials
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions, including the proper use of personal protective equipment
Safe handling of chemicals and basic pest control rules
• Basic fertilization practices for plants, shrubs, and trees
• Operation and minor maintenance of hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment used in landscape maintenance
• Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations
• Basic record keeping and arithmetic
Ability to:
• Perform physically demanding outdoor work
• Set up and maintain safe work zones, including cones, barricades, and traffic flagging as needed
• Work effectively with the public in a professional and courteous manner
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Identify materials and supplies needed for tasks
• Safely and skillfully use tools and equipment related to the work
• Maintain basic logs or records of work performed
• Work independently or as part of a team and maintain effective working relationships
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Equivalent to graduation from high school; and One year of relatable construction, maintenance, or repair experience. Spanish language skills are also desirable.
Licenses and Certifications: Must possess a valid California Class C driver license and have a satisfactory driving record.
Pay Range: $25.24-$30.29/hour DOE
