Iain Oughtred Whilly Boat sailing skiff, one of several similar boats designed by Oughtred inspired by the working boats of Shetland and Orkney in Scotland. These boats are tough, capable and good load carriers, as well as being fast under sail and oar.
This unique Whilly, “Ku’oko’a” was built in 2011, in the San Francisco Bay Area. ("Kūʻokoʻa" in the Hawaiian language means independence, freedom, or liberty. It is often used in the context of Hawaiian independence, particularly in reference to Lā Kūʻokoʻa, or Hawaiian Independence Day. The term emphasizes the ability of communities to govern themselves and manage resources locally.” - according to Google AI)
It has an Electric Minn Kota Engine Mount Trolling Motor cleverly mounted under the keel in front of the rudder. Inside the boat, the sealed electronics and the remote speed control are installed, out of the way, under the rear thwart and the side bench. The AGM 12V battery and charger are safely installed in the forward water-tight compartment. There is also an electric bilge pump which has a through-hull. Electric running lights complete the package, making this a unique 14.5 foot daysailer which is safe and a delight to sail, row, or silently power under any conditions.
This boat is constructed from glued marine plywood which makes it strong and light as well as being easy to maintain. The boat is also easy to launch and recover single-handed which makes using it a hassle-free affair. It can be sailed single-handed without a problem but also has space for 3 adults.
