ADOPT-A-BEACH

Dear Beach Users,

I would like to introduce you to our Adopt-A-Beach Program that has been coordinated by the California Coastal Commission and California State Parks. The program is not just about trash. It is about the need for clean oceans, shorelines and waterways.

In order to �adopt� a beach, volunteers commit to clean the beach at least three times per year. This is your big chance to get involved! Determine the beach you want to clean. Our District runs from Los Osos to the San Luis Obispo County line in Big Sur. Contact me to help you determine dates and times for cleanups, provide you with supplies, and tell you where to leave trash and recyclables.

Recruit your friends, coworkers and relatives to help you clean the beach. The more people that participate, the more trash is removed from California beaches. Remember, all participants must fill out a waiver form. All children under the age of 18 will need a parent�s signature. These forms should be returned to me.

Once all those details are completed, it�s time to clean the beach. Dress for the weather. Wear layers of clothing. Bring a hat and gloves. Be sure to check your tide book for extreme tides. Trash will be picked up in trash bags provided by the State. There will be separate bags for recycling glass, plastic, paper and aluminum. Have fun, but be cautious. Do not pick up broken glass, rusty nails or syringes. Do not touch stranded, injured or dead animals. Flag those items for the local ranger.

- You can help with walking dogs and/or just giving them attention
- You can help with socializing cats - just spending time talking with them and
getting them ready for new adoptive homes
- You can help with inquiries made by prospective adopters
- You can help with cleaning their cages (They are initially cleaned in the
mornings, but during the day they often need litter changed, empty food bowls
taken out, water filled, etc.

Creating a garden for an ancient Bavarian house

Volunteer project: In the beautiful city of Regensburg, you will be on the traces of the Celts, the Romans and ancient Bavarian gardeners. The project can be found on the colonies of these tribes, where a new construction-area is being built.

You�ll support the creation of a garden for an ancient Bavarian house, which is more than 2000 years old. You can help at the construction of little theme-parks, which deal with the long history of the area. Furthermore, you�ll help at the implementation of an art-project. Also you can experience how the beaver acts as a landscape-former, forming the ambiance to nearby Lakeland.

Age range: 16 - 26 years old

Location: Bavaria; 120 km north of Munich, 100 km south of Nuremberg, 200 km to Prague. Regensburg, with its 152,000 inhabitants is situated on the northern most point of the River Danube. In the past year, the medieval Old Town with many monuments, has become an UNESCO-World-culture-heir. On the border of the Bavarian Forest, Regensburg has a great natural environment, with open air baths, lakes, and a pulsing life with many leisure time possibilities.

Heal The Kids is a charitable organization based in central California. Catalyst for Youth, a 501(C)(3) public charity and educational corporation is our fiscal sponsor. A fiscal sponsor is someone who allows another non-profit to work under their 501(c)(3).

Heal the Kids is a non-profit charity located on the Central Coast of California in northern Santa Barbara County. Heal the Kids was started when the founders saw a great need to provide low income children with the tools, supplies, opportunity and motivation to succeed in their own lives. Heal the Kids hopes to provide low income children with school supplies, tutoring services, constructive after school activities, and much more. Each service will give children the opportunity to grow and learn to better their own lives. All of the services would be provided free of charged by Heal the Kids from donations from the community.

Heal the Kids wishes to target children from ages 5 until 21 years old of age. Essentially, the founders believe that children from low income families, in northern Santa Barbara County, have found themselves in an endless cycle of poverty. Many of these families are close and only have each other to rely on, therefore it is expected that as children reach an age when they can earn an income, then the children should break away from education and help with the financial situation. Other families might view education as vital for the child�s success, but the family is unable to provide the tool a child needs to gain a great education. Then at another extreme, some children might have the motivation to be successful in their education but maybe lack the support in their families. The founders ultimately believe that if children are not given the tools they need to succeed, the children will be forced to remain in the economical caste in which they and their family find themselves.

Heal the Kids will provide these much needed programs/tools with funding from donations from the surrounding community, written grants, and our own personal fundraisers. All programs will be provided for the benefit of the children. Children and adolescences should be given the attention and care that they so desperately need in able to support their academic, social, emotional and metal growth. Teachers expect academic excellence, but we must also keep in mind that a young mind can only reach excellence if all their basic needs are met first. The need for belonging is extremely important for all children. Heal the Kids will help children realize their position in the world and give them the confidence to chase their dreams. With continued attention, children and adolescences will progress in their educational careers and will surely learn to express each others� multiple identities in ways that meaningful. Heal the Kids can have more power than we might realize. Heal the Kids has the potential to bring out the excellence in those who less see it within themselves. This is our hope for the children we will serve. We hope that the strategies we are able to provide our children can help bring out the best in every child to make them succeed not just in school but in life!

Environmental cleanup on the north-east coast of Iceland

To truly sense the remote beauty of the north-east, then the charming little fishing village of ��rsh�fn on the north-east coast is the place to go. The town of ��rsh�fn lies on the head of the Langanes peninsula and has 388 inhabitants. There's a variety of outdoor activity on offer, from hiking to salmon and trout fishing, and horse trekking in some of Iceland's most spectacular scenery. The Langanes Peninsula is also one of the best areas in which to enjoy Iceland's rich and varied birdlife. ��rsh�fn is within driving distance of some Iceland's most prized natural pearls, such as Myvatn, with its geothermal activity, and the waterfall Dettifoss, one of Europe's most powerful and spectacular waterfalls. This village has a good, natural harbour and the inhabitants base their livelihood on fishing, fish processing and commerce.
The volunteer group will be working on cleaning up the shores and beaches in the area. Additional work will be undertaken as reforestation tasks, planting trees and taking care of those already planted.
